We live in a very busy world where there are often two working parents—and never quite enough time in the day to do everything you’d like. Then you add kids, and more specifically kids’ activities, to the mix, and things can get stretched pretty thin.
As parents, we want to be involved in our kids’ lives as much as possible. As they grow older and more independent, however, spending time together becomes trickier—especially when there’s more than one child. Finding quality time is never easy, and finding something everyone enjoys is just as challenging.
As a martial arts instructor for many years, I’ve had the unique opportunity to teach private lessons to families as a group. It’s an interesting dynamic because of the differences in ages and interests. That being said, it’s also one of the most fulfilling things I experience as an instructor—watching families bond and grow together.
That’s what, in my opinion, still makes martial arts an ideal family activity in 2026—and something you may want to strongly consider if you haven’t already.
It gets everyone off their devices
We live in a world where everyone is on their phones—and parents aren’t off the hook either. Finding a reason to unplug for an extended period of time is difficult, especially as a family unit.
Martial arts provides a healthy, structured activity outside the digital world while also improving mental well-being.
You work together as a team
There aren’t many situations where parents and kids are on equal footing. In martial arts, everyone starts at the same point and works through the same process together.
This creates a unique bonding experience and allows families to see each other in a completely different light.
You stay active together (which just makes sense)
If you’re trying to find time for the gym while also getting your kids into sports like baseball or soccer, your schedule quickly becomes divided and inefficient.
Fitness works best as a routine—and when you do that routine together, you’re maximizing your time and energy while keeping everyone involved.
You’re learning something valuable—not just having fun
Any activity you enjoy is time well spent. But when that activity also builds confidence, self-esteem, and personal safety, it carries even more value.
Knowing how to defend yourself is, at worst, a smart life skill—and at best, a real-life superpower.
It’s actually cool right now (yes, really)
Trends matter—people are naturally drawn to what’s popular. Martial arts has seen a surge in interest thanks to shows like Cobra Kai, anime like Demon Slayer, and popular video games.
While trends come and go, there’s no denying that martial arts is having a moment—and that’s often what gets people started.
You get in shape (when most people don’t)
Let’s be honest—most people struggle to stay in shape, even if they want to tell themselves otherwise.
Getting fit requires consistent physical effort—there’s no shortcut. Martial arts makes that process engaging, challenging, and actually enjoyable.
You build a stronger bond together
Modern family bonding time can be few and far between—maybe a camping trip, a dinner out, or a long-awaited vacation.
Those moments are great, but they’re occasional. Martial arts, on the other hand, is consistent.
If you truly want to spend time together and build a stronger connection, this is one of the best ways to do it.
If you’d like to get involved in martial arts as a family activity, Komodo Taekwondo & Martial Arts specializes in exactly that. We believe in bringing families together through fun, structured training.
