Frequently Asked Questions

If you are interested in joining Komodo Taekwondo & Martial Arts and want more information, these are the questions we receive most from first-time students. If you have a question not listed below please contact us at any time and we are happy to answer them!

How much do private lessons cost?

The first and most obvious question;) The price of classes will vary slightly depending on how many students will be training at once along with their respective ages. Please call/text us at 403-374-2727 or email info@airdrietaekwondo.ca for rates and availability.

How often do you recommend training per week or month and is there a minimum limit required?

How often you train is completely up to you depending on your martial arts or fitness goals. We recommend at least once a week for the best results but there is no minimum amount of days per week or month you need to commit to. You set your own class schedule based on what works best for you!

What are the benefits of private lessons as opposed to regular classes?

1. People who like martial arts but are more introverted and are not as comfortable in big group settings.

2. Flexibility in your schedule. You can train when you want and as much as you want. Mornings, afternoons, nights are all available Monday through Friday.

3. Quicker advancement in terms of rank and skills progression. One private lesson is considered the equivalent of 3 regular classes in martial arts.

4. More focus and attention on the areas you want to learn most. That could be self-defense, cardio, fitness, flexibility, sparring, or tournament fighting. You can help customize your own training routine.

5. Lots of variety in our program where you can learn all elements of martial arts including, striking, kicking, grappling, wrestling, and ground fighting all in one place.

6. Opportunity to learn weapons for experienced students; nunchuks, bo staff, kitana sword, sai, kama and more. Weapons training is very rare and not available in most martial arts clubs.

7. People with learning disabilities or handicaps who need more one-on-one attention. We customize programs specically designed for people with special needs.

Do you offer testing for belts or rank advancement with private classes?

Yes students are elligible to test for their next belt level through private training sessions. This is for our Taekwondo program however only not other martial arts we currently teach.

How long does it take to advance to my next rank? How long does it take to receive my black belt?

The amount of time it takes for students to advance to their next rank depends on various factors. How often a student trains, how often they practice, their skills progression, and proper etiquette towards instructors and fellow students. The average time frame for a black belt is 4-5 years depending on all factors mentioned above.

Am I able to purchase uniforms or other equipment through you?

Yes, you can place orders for any equipment we offer and pick them up at our home studio.

What is the level of contact allowed when training or sparring?

For early belt levels, we strongly limit the amount of contact permitted. As a student progresses however we will introduce a greater level of contact if this is the student’s preference. For younger students the parents or guardians will dictate a level of contact they feel is safe for their kids.

Do you train students for tournaments or competitions?

Although this is not our primary focus, we have trained students for Taekwondo, Boxing, or Kickboxing competitions. We also have also trained other instructors as well.

Are there any contracts or minimum commitment to join Komodo Taekwondo & Martial Arts?

No, students book on a class-to-class basis as they see fit. Many students pay monthly but that decision is completely up to you.

If I have a belt in a previous martial art can I keep my previous rank?

Students are elligible to retain their previous rank, even if they studied a martial art other than Taekwondo. There will be a skills assesment that takes place first to find the proper rank moving forward.

Testing Proceedures For Students Training Towards Their Black Belt Level

Students who take private Taekwondo & Martial Arts lessons are eligible to test for their next belt level once they’ve met all the requirements.

Grading procedures consist of 6 different main components…

  • A general basic fitness test which increases in difficulty with each belt level.
  • An oral test based on the history of Taekwondo and proper martial arts etiquette.
  • Self-defence test where students demonstrate their ability to execute various holds, takedowns and escapes based on their belt level.
  • Sparring sessions (with a partner) to demonstrate their fighting techniques both offensive and defensive.
  • Demonstration of patterns for students enrolled in the full Taekwondo training program. Patterns are optional based on the student’s goals and may be replaced with weapons training or another additional skill.
  • Board breaking in a safe manner that increases in difficulty for every belt level.
