Frequently Asked Questions
If you are considering joining our martial arts club and want more information, these are the questions we recieve most from first time students. If you have a questions not listed below please contact us at any time and we are happy to answer them.
What are the benefits of private lessons as opposed to regular classes?
1. People who like martial arts but are more introverted and are not as comfortable in big groups.
2. Flexibility in schedule, you can train when you want and as much as you want. Mornings, afternoons, nights, and weekends are all available.
3. Quicker advancement in terms of rank and skills progression. One private lesson is considered the equivalent of 3 regular classes in Taekwondo.
4. More focus on the areas you want to learn most. That could be self-defense, cardio, fitness, flexibility, sparring, or tournament fighting. You can help customize your own routine.
5. Variety in our program where you can learn elements of martial arts including, striking, grappling, wrestling, and ground fighting all in one place.
6. Opportunity to learn weapons for experienced students; nunchuks, bo staff, kitana sword, sai, kama and more. Weapons training is very rare in most martial arts clubs.
7. People with learning disabilities or handicaps who need more one-on-one attention.
Will you eventually be offering regular classes for larger groups in Airdrie?
At the moment our focus is on private lessons and smaller training groups only. Regular classes may however also be on the horizon at a later date.
Do you offer testing for belts or rank advancement with private classes?
Yes students are elligible to test for their next belt level through private training.
How long does it take to advance to my next rank? How long does it take to receive my black belt?
The amount of time it takes for students to advance to their next rank depends on various factors. How often a student trains, how often they practice, their skills progression, and etiquette towards instructors and fellow students.
Am I able to purchase uniforms or other equipment through you?
Yes orders will be placed through our main location in Calgary then brought to our Airdrie location. We can also show students the most affordable places to purchase quality equipment as well.
How often to you recommend training per month for private or small group sessions?
To progress at a reasonable rate we recommend training at least twice a month or ideally 3-4 times per week.
What is the level of contact allowed when sparring and training through Hydra Taekwondo?

In certain cases a student is elligible to retain their previous rank, even if they studied a martial art other than Taekwondo. There will be a skills assesment that takes place to find the proper rank for experienced students.
Students who take private lessons with us are elligable to test for their next belt level once they’ve met all the necessary requirements.
Grading proceedures consist of 5 different components…
- An oral test based on the history of Taekwondo, Korean terminoloy and proper Taekwondo etiquette.
- Self defense test where students will demonstrate their ability to execute various holds and escapes based on their belt level.
- Sparring sessions with a partner to demonstrate their fighting techniques and abilities.
- Demonstration of patterns/katas for student’s next belt level, the highest rated component of the test.
